What Is a Knockout Electrical Box?
Knockout electrical boxes are a special type of electrical enclosure that simplifies setup for junction boxes, electrical panels, communications equipment, and any other type of enclosure that requires pass-throughs for connectors and cables. From electrical wiring to antennas to stress relief clamps, electrical devices require all kinds of equipment that needs a point to enter and exit the enclosure.
Manually creating cutouts for these using a knockout punch is laborious and time-consuming work. By using a knockout box instead, electricians and device designers can skip the process of measuring and punching their own knockouts, creating a fast and headache-free installation process. Box knockouts are pre-measured to create perfectly sized openings for common conduit sizes, and each takes just a few seconds to remove. They can also be easily reclosed by knockout plugs and knockout seals later.
Many knockout electrical box models also include NEMA and/or IP ratings for protection against water and particulate matter, as well as additional protective features like corrosion resistance. To get the full benefit of these protection ratings, it’s important to find the right size of cable glands and/or seals to maintain a tight seal around the knockout hole.
