Polycase IP Ratings are based on the NEMA 250 to IEC 60529 conversion table published by NEMA.org. Learn more about what an IP65 rating means and what you can expect from our IP65 electrical enclosures below.
What Does an IP65 Rating Mean?
The Ingress Protection (IP) rating scale is the most commonly used system for rating protective enclosures worldwide. An IP rating uses two digits, each of which rates the enclosure’s degree of protection against environmental hazards.
The first digit rates the level of protection against dust, dirt, and other solid objects on an ascending scale of 1 to 6. The second digit rates protection against water on a scale of 1 to 8. Note that IP ratings don’t account for other potentially relevant factors like corrosion resistance, as North American NEMA ratings do. (See our guides to IP enclosure ratings and NEMA enclosure types for all of the details.)
An IP65 enclosure offers protection suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications. The first digit, 6, denotes totally dust-tight protection. The second digit, 5, stands for watertight protection against dripping, splashing, leaking and low-pressure water jets. IP65 is a common rating for commercial and industrial enclosures that need strong basic protection.
