Carbon Steel Enclosures

Carbon steel enclosures from Polycase provide NEMA Type 4X protection for electrical equipment in both indoor and outdoor industrial environments. Carbon steel is a highly durable and cost-effective type of steel that’s commonly used in heavy-duty enclosures, and it even provides an inherent level of EMI/RFI attenuation.

Our carbon steel electrical enclosures are UL Listed to NEMA type 1, 2, 4, 4X and 12 ratings and meet IP65 and IP66 requirements. The enclosures are made from 16-gauge steel with a gray powder coat finish. An internal mounting panel, external surface mounting brackets and all hardware is included.

Evaluating Carbon Steel Enclosures

When you’re choosing a carbon steel enclosure for your application, these are some factors to keep in mind:

  • IP/NEMA Rating: Many applications require enclosures with an IP and/or NEMA rating to protect the equipment inside from environmental conditions. Our carbon steel enclosures feature a waterproof and dustproof gasket, tested and rated for compliance with IP ratings up to IP66 and NEMA ratings up to NEMA 4X.
  • Corrosion Resistance: Although stainless steel enclosures offers a greater degree of natural corrosion resistance, powder coating can provide corrosion-resistant properties to carbon steel as well. Polycase’s carbon steel enclosures feature a durable gray powder coating finish that enhances corrosion resistance and makes them a cost-effective alternative to stainless steel for some use cases.
  • Mounting Hardware: Carbon steel enclosures are commonly used as wall mount enclosures for control panels, junction boxes and more. To simplify mounting, Polycase’s carbon steel enclosures come with all required mounting hardware, including durable surface mount brackets. 
  • Ease of Access: Does your application require quick access to an electrical box’s internal components? Our carbon steel enclosures include hinged covers with a keyed quarter-turn latch for secure and convenient access. 
  • Size: It’s important to choose a size of electrical enclosure that can accommodate your application’s needs, including the space to install and assemble all required components. That’s why Polycase’s lineup includes a wide range of sizes suitable for different use cases.
