What Is a NEMA 3X Enclosure?
The NEMA 3X rating is part of the NEMA enclosure rating system, a rating scale established by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association for evaluating the protective performance of electrical enclosures. The NEMA system rates enclosures on how well they resist a variety of environmental conditions. These conditions can include anything from light splashing of water to falling dirt and windblown dust to rain, sleet and snow. Some ratings even protect against corrosive agents.
Any NEMA 3 enclosure offers a strong degree of protection from the ingress of water and dust. A rating in the NEMA 3 family (such as NEMA 3X and NEMA 3R) indicates that an enclosure model is suitable for both indoor use and general outdoor use.
Like most other NEMA 3 enclosures, NEMA 3X enclosures are made with a gasket that allows them to effectively keep out water and dust. This makes them popular for sensitive applications such as power distribution, control panels or communications equipment that require excellent protection for sensitive connectors and components.
In addition, NEMA 3X enclosures offer corrosion protection that helps protect devices from the harmful effects of corrosive agents, such as salt water and industrial chemicals. (NEMA ratings that include an X, such as NEMA 4X, always indicate a degree of corrosion resistance.)
