Understanding Your Enclosure: What Is NEMA 3R?

Understanding Your Enclosure What Is NEMA 3R

NEMA-rated enclosures are essential for protecting electrical and electronic equipment in potentially hazardous environments. The NEMA 3R rating is one of the more commonly used NEMA ratings for outdoor enclosures, but it’s also one that can be a little confusing to understand due to some of its special characteristics.

So, here’s the question: What is NEMA 3R? How is it different from other NEMA 3 ratings, and is it the right choice for your enclosure application? Up ahead, we’ll help you sort out exactly what NEMA 3R means and how to determine whether a NEMA 3R enclosure is what you need.

Why NEMA Ratings Are Important

Let’s begin with a quick refresher on NEMA ratings. The NEMA rating scale is an industry standard issued by the National Electrical Manufacturers’ Association. It provides an easy way to evaluate how well an enclosure protects against environmental hazards like water, oil, dirt and corrosion.

You’ll find NEMA ratings on many different types of enclosures, from industrial control boxes to electrical junction boxes. Anywhere that electrical or electronic equipment could be exposed to hazards that affect its safety or functionality, a NEMA enclosure box will likely be required.

It’s crucial to fully understand the rating of any enclosure before specifying it in your bill of materials or otherwise selecting it for your project. If you’re not familiar with the NEMA rating scale, take some time now to read our NEMA enclosure ratings guide for a complete introduction to how the system works.

What Is NEMA 3R? Understanding the Rating

NEMA 3R is one of several ratings in the NEMA 3 category. All NEMA-3-rated enclosures are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. Of course, that doesn’t mean that all the ratings are the same or that they’re equally well suited for all applications.

NEMA 3R enclosure protection

Specifically, a NEMA 3R enclosure offers protection from:

  • Falling dirt
  • Accidental contact by people or objects
  • Light dripping and splashing of water
  • Weather conditions like rain and snow
  • External ice formation on the enclosure

However, these descriptors alone don’t tell the full story. Let’s look at some of the unique features of NEMA 3R enclosures next.

Why NEMA 3R Enclosures Don’t Protect Against Airborne Particulates

Unlike some other NEMA 3 ratings, a NEMA 3R enclosure rating does not require the enclosure to offer protection from windblown dust and debris. For this reason, you’ll see some NEMA 3R enclosures on the market that are constructed without a dust-tight gasket.

While these enclosures can offer some short-term cost savings, they limit the versatility of NEMA-3R-rated enclosures and can leave sensitive equipment exposed to airborne particulates in unexpected circumstances. That’s exactly why Polycase’s NEMA 3R enclosures are also designed with continuous silicone gaskets for compliance with more protective NEMA ratings.

Drainage Holes/Weep Holes

NEMA 3R enclosures also have one key feature that’s not present in other NEMA 3 ratings: drainage holes. To comply with the NEMA 3R rating, an enclosure must have holes that allow any liquids that accumulate inside the box to drain out. This can be a key feature for alleviating condensation within an enclosure before the moisture can cause harm to a device.

You can also consider adding enclosure ventilation accessories to assist with controlling moisture inside your enclosure.

What Is a NEMA 3RX Rating?

You might also see a NEMA 3RX rating on some enclosures. Whenever a NEMA rating has an X added to the end (as with the NEMA 4X rating), it signifies protection against corrosion.

Thus, a NEMA 3RX-rated enclosure offers the same protection as a NEMA 3R, but with additional protection against corrosive environments.

What Is NEMA 3’s Equivalent IP Rating?

IP ratings are another enclosure rating scale used in Europe and other parts of the world to evaluate enclosures’ protective qualities. In some cases, device designers might need to specify an enclosure with an IP rating, especially if their devices will be sold or used in EU markets.

However, because the NEMA rating scale includes several characteristics that the IP scale does not, it’s not possible to convert ratings like NEMA 3R into a strict IP equivalent. For example, the IP scale contains no equivalent to the drainage provision included in the NEMA 3R rating.

That said, you can use the information included in our NEMA vs. IP guide to get a general sense of which IP ratings roughly correspond to which NEMA ratings. In addition, most NEMA-rated enclosures from Polycase are also designed for compliance with IP ratings, so make sure to check the IP ratings on any model you’re considering.

Common Applications for a NEMA 3R Enclosure

NEMA 3R enclosures are common in many different outdoor applications. They’re excellent at providing a basic level of outdoor protection that complies with relevant sections of the National Electrical Code. However, their lower level of protection means it’s important to be careful which applications you choose them for.

Generally, NEMA 3R enclosures perform best when placed in an area that’s not directly exposed to the elements. They can be a good choice for sheltered or semi-sheltered outdoor environments. Thanks to their drainage holes, they’re able to drain off condensation and small amounts of liquid, making them a solid option for protection against light precipitation.

NEMA 3R enclosures can also be an excellent choice for demanding indoor environments like manufacturing facilities. These facilities often have more predictable conditions than outdoor environments, which can make NEMA 3R enclosures suitable for facilities without significant amounts of circulating airborne particulates.

NEMA 3R enclosures in use

Some of the applications where you’ll most often find NEMA 3R enclosures in use include:

  • Junction boxes
  • Lighting equipment
  • Industrial control panels
  • Electrical switchgear
  • Outdoor communications gear such as public Wi-Fi routers
  • Utility equipment

Naturally, whether a NEMA 3R enclosure is appropriate for these applications depends on the specific conditions that your devices will encounter. Next, let’s look at some of the conditions under which you might need to upgrade your device protection.

When Do You Need a Higher NEMA Rating Than NEMA 3R?

You’ll probably want to choose a more protective NEMA enclosure rating in environments where devices might be subjected to any of the following:

  • Windblown dust and dirt
  • Hose-directed water flow
  • Complete submersion in water
  • Corrosion hazards such as salt water or industrial chemicals

These aren’t the only circumstances that can call for a higher rating than NEMA 3R. Make sure to carefully consider the specific conditions of your application and determine whether they match up with the protection provided by a NEMA 3R enclosure. Remember, too, that outdoor environments can be highly unpredictable, so don’t be too quick to assume that your enclosure will never encounter windblown dust.

If your application requires a more protective NEMA rating, learn about NEMA 4X enclosures and NEMA 6P enclosures. These are two of the most popular NEMA ratings for applications that require heavy-duty enclosures. In fact, all of Polycase’s NEMA 3R models are designed to offer protection above and beyond a NEMA 3R rating, even while maintaining an affordable price point.
