We are often asked about submersion testing on the ZH Series and ZQ Series of NEMA rated junction boxes. These enclosures are UL Listed to UL 508A, Type 1, 2, 3, 3R, 4, 4X, 5, 6, 6P, 12 & 13 (File E352997). The critical rating here is 6P which defines protection against prolonged submersion at limited depth in water. Per UL-50, the 6P Prolonged Submersion testing is done at a depth of 6' for a 24 hour period. The testing is done with a conduit connector installed. If there is no water ingress after a 24 hour period, the test is passed. Our enclosures passed this testing in the 4-screw configuration.
The reasoning is that if any failure were to happen, it would happen in the initial 24 hours. And remember, if you don't need submersion protection, but still want your enclosure to be waterproof, you can always check out our NEMA 4x enclosures. It's also critical that the enclosure be used with connectors that have the same UL rating. Check out all our waterproof enclosures here.
