What Is a NEMA 4X Enclosure?

The NEMA rating system is a system of enclosure ratings created and maintained by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association. These ratings provide a useful standard for rating an enclosure’s protective qualities, allowing buyers to identify which features matter for their applications and to select enclosures that offer the right level of protection. (See our NEMA ratings guide for a full rundown of the system.)NEMA 4X enclosures include many of the same protective features as baseline NEMA Type 4 models. The built-in watertight and dust-tight gasket in a NEMA 4X enclosure is designed to protect against:
  • Settling or windblown dust, dirt and debris
  • Rain, snow, sleet and general wet weather
  • Hose-directed water from pressurized wash-downs
In addition to these characteristics, NEMA 4X enclosures offer corrosion resistance. They’re able to withstand various corrosive environmental factors, including harsh chemicals and saltwater corrosion. For applications in which sensitive equipment might be exposed to these factors, a NEMA 4X enclosure is a must.
