Customers and prospective customers often ask us if they are allowed to modify Polycase's CAD drawings. The short answer is yes. However it may be good to start at the beginning by explaining what kinds of drawings are available, how you can request them and finally, what the advantages are to working with a 3D model of an electronics enclosure.
Polycase engineer Doug French gives us a concise explanation on the types of drawings we can provide:
2D Drawings / Spec Sheets / PDF:
These drawings are simply a line drawing or a sketch of the enclosure with corresponding dimensions. These are typically requested by a technologically savvy customer who may be attempting to develop a new product/invention and does not have expensive design software.
3D Drawings / DXF, dwg, IGES and SolidWorks:
These enclosure drawings are typically requested by engineers or more sophisticated customers and provide those engineers with the capabilities to manipulate the drawings. Most customers who use these drawings will actually be manipulating the drawing and indicating where they will potentially need cuts or printing on the enclosure. SolidWorks is the most common computer application for 3D Computer Aided Design. Polycase can provide an electronics engineer with any of the CAD files above.
Contact Polycase if you have any additional questions about CAD drawings for plastic enclosures. Next time, we’ll cover how you can obtain the different types of drawings.
