What Is a NEMA 3SX Enclosure?
NEMA 3SX is a NEMA rating for protective outdoor electrical enclosures. The base rating is NEMA 3, which means that the enclosure provides a degree of protection against the ingress of water and the ingress of solid foreign objects that makes them suitable for basic outdoor use.
Thus, you can count on a NEMA 3SX enclosure to protect your device’s sensitive electrical components from weather conditions like rain, snow, and sleet. The solid ingress protection of a NEMA 3SX enclosure also protects from hazards such as windblown dust, airborne flyings of debris, and falling dirt.
NEMA 3S and 3SX enclosures also have special design features that help them deal more effectively with the problem of ice formation on the enclosure’s outer body. To achieve a NEMA 3S or 3SX rating, an enclosure’s external mechanisms (such as latches and hinges) must continue to be operable even when ice has formed on them. If your enclosure needs to keep electrical equipment safe in a cold environment prone to freeze-overs, a 3S or 3SX rating can be critical.
Additionally, like other NEMA standards that contain an X (such as NEMA 4X and NEMA 3RX enclosures), NEMA 3SX enclosures include built-in corrosion resistance. This can be important for devices that will experience harsh and corrosive environmental conditions, such as electrical equipment located in marine environments or in industrial facilities where harsh chemicals are frequently used.
