What Is a NEMA Type 3S Enclosure?
NEMA enclosure ratings are a system that the National Electrical Manufacturers Association has established for evaluating how well electrical enclosures protect against various environmental conditions, most of them related to the ingress of water and solid materials. These conditions include everything from rain and sleet to falling dirt and windblown dust, all of which can be potentially harmful to the enclosed equipment and electrical connectors.
NEMA 3 enclosures are designated as suitable for both outdoor and indoor use, and they offer a substantial degree of protection against hazards such as light splashing of water, contact with hazardous parts, and flying lint or dust. A NEMA 3S rating builds on the protection offered by a NEMA 3 rating with a specific protective feature designed for environments where freeze-over conditions are possible.
Specifically, a NEMA 3S enclosure’s external mechanisms, such as its hinges and/or lock, must remain operable even when ice has formed on the outside of the enclosure. For cold-weather applications, this feature can be a must-have for keeping key electrical components and controls accessible during unfavorable weather conditions.

Our NEMA 3S enclosure models also typically feature additional NEMA ratings, such as NEMA 4X and NEMA 6. Thus, in addition to the core protective features of a NEMA 3S rating, these enclosures often provide extra features such as corrosion resistance or the ability to withstand temporary submersion and hose-directed water. We design our NEMA-rated enclosures for compliance with multiple ratings so that they provide the best possible level of protection for the diverse needs of our customers’ applications.
