Fast Facts on NEMA Enclosures
The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) maintains a set of standards for electrical enclosures known as NEMA ratings. These ratings denote specific protective qualities of electrical enclosures and establish their degrees of protection on a scale from 1 to 13 (although higher ratings don’t necessarily correlate with more protection).
Through NEMA ratings, device designers can easily identify the enclosure type that provides the right degree of protection for their devices. Read our ultimate NEMA enclosure guide to learn the specifics of the various NEMA types and what kind of protection each rating provides for the enclosed equipment.
Basics of the NEMA 13 Rating
A NEMA 13 rated enclosure is designed for indoor use in a variety of harsh environmental conditions. The definition of the NEMA 13 rating includes protection against:
The NEMA 13 rating has similar characteristics to the widely used NEMA 12 indoor enclosure rating, but it adds additional protection against oil and coolant that NEMA 12 does not offer. This makes NEMA 13 models popular for a variety of indoor applications, including junction boxes, control panels and many other critical devices.
Note that, although it’s the highest number on the NEMA rating scale, NEMA 13 is not the highest degree of protection available. A NEMA 13 enclosure does not offer protection against corrosion or submersion unless it’s also rated for a higher NEMA rating such as NEMA 4X or NEMA 6P.
