What is laser marking?

Laser marking is a technique that offers pinpoint precision by utilizing a concentrated beam of light to permanently alter the material surface or remove surface coatings, resulting in high-resolution text, graphics, or symbols.

Why choose laser marking?

  • Cost-Effective: Traditional ink printing methods can get expensive. Laser marking provides high-quality results for functional graphics at a lower price point.
  • Durability: Unlike adhesive labels, laser marking is permanent and cannot be removed, making it an ideal marking solution for enclosures exposed to harsh environments with extreme temperatures or chemicals.
  • Accuracy: The integrated visionary system employs advanced image processing, allowing our software to position the laser with pinpoint accuracy around intricate cutouts or features.
  • Flexibility: Laser marking enables the placement of graphics in challenging locations that traditional inkjet or pad printing techniques cannot access, such as the inside of a cover or in proximity to a rib or other raised feature.
  • Environmentally friendly: No additives or chemicals are used during the process, making it safe for both humans and the environment.

What are the limitations?

Laser marking is typically categorized as "contrast graphics" since it does not provide a range of color choices. Instead, it excels at creating contrast marks, relying on the material and color of the enclosure to determine the outcome. This often leads to dark grayscale results for gray polycarbonate or ABS enclosures, rather than a true black. In the case of coated aluminum, such as our EX series, laser marking removes/lightens the coating, revealing the natural aluminum underneath, resulting in high-contrast, crisp results that cannot be achieved by basic printing. It's worth noting that black polycarbonate or ABS enclosures are oftentimes not a good fit for laser marking due to the end results not aligning with our standard of quality.
