Understanding IP Ratings on Electronic Enclosures

May 14th, 2012

A customer recently called Polycase to ask if the WP Series is IP67 rated.  I pulled up the IP ratings from our FAQs page and discovered the WP Series is IP65 rated, not IP67, but what does that mean?

IP or Ingress Protection ratings specify the degree of environmental protection an enclosure offers. There are typically 2 numbers (IPXX) indicating the protection level of the enclosure. The first X indicates protection against solid objects and the second X indicates protection against water.

IP First X (Protection level against solid objects)

0 No protection
1 Protection against large objects > 50 mm (a person’s hand)
2 Protection against medium objects >12 mm ( a person’s finger)
3 Protection against small objects >2.5 mm ( tools or cables)
4 Protection against minute objects >1 mm (small wires)
5 Protection against limited amounts of dust
6 Total protection from dust

IP Second X (Protection level against water)

0 No Protection
1 Protection against vertically falling drops of water
2 Protection against direct sprays of water up to 15° from vertical
3 Protection against direct sprays of water up to 60° from vertical
4 Protection against splashing water from all directions
5 Protection against low pressure jets of water from all directions
6 Protection against temporary flooding of water
7 Protection against immersion < 1 m
8 Protection against immersion > 1 m

All of Polycase enclosures can be rated IP40, assuming the covers are properly secured. The WP, WC, and WA Series enclosures have been designed to meet requirements for rating of IP65. The ML and HD Series enclosures have been designed to meet requirements for IP66.
