What Are UL Listed Enclosures?
UL (formerly known as Underwriters Laboratories) is among the world’s most respected safety standards organizations. It tests and verifies products according to a huge range of standards, including NEMA and IP enclosure ratings.Â
A UL Listed enclosure is one that UL has verified as being in compliance with the relevant standards, either through its own in-house testing or through outside testing that meets UL requirements. These tests include exposure to hose-directed water, submersion, windblown dust and other hazards, depending on the intended rating of the enclosure.
Why Is UL Listing Important for Enclosures?
Across nearly every industry, UL is the most trusted authority in safety testing. A UL Listed enclosure is a must when you need to know the exact degree of protection that your enclosure provides, with reliable data to back it up. You’ll never have to wonder, for example, whether your NEMA 4X enclosures will withstand rain, sleet, corrosion, dust and other key hazards because they’ve been thoroughly tested by industry experts.
What’s more, numerous industry standards (such as building and electrical codes) require the use of UL Listed enclosures and components. These requirements can apply to a vast range of electronic and electrical equipment — from consumer electronics to industrial control panels — and they help protect consumer safety by ensuring that manufacturers and builders use high-quality materials to create their products.
Verifying That Your Electrical Enclosure Is UL Listed
Polycase makes it simple to verify the UL Listed status of any enclosure. Find Polycase’s UL file number in the description on the enclosure’s product page and then enter it in UL’s Product iQ database. You’ll have the option to access each enclosure’s testing data and UL certification at your convenience.
Note that certain configurations and modifications can affect an enclosure’s NEMA and/or IP rating. UL performs its tests on stock models unless otherwise specified, so some custom enclosure modifications may make the enclosure’s UL listing invalid.
