Because both 2D and 3D offer their own unique benefits and options (there’s that word again) neither will truly ever “win” this question. Many fear that the 3D drawing will be too complex and time consuming to produce, therefore will lead to lost productivity. But the sheer fact that 3D drawings were created shows that there is a desire for these types of drawings.
Due to the price of the 3D software, which is currently higher than versions of the 2D products, many companies have not invested in this technology. This is a sound reason to keep 2D drawings of the products. Your customers, vendors, or suppliers will not be able to use your drawings if they have not updated to the newer technology. Additionally, PDF works well for many customers and with Adobe being a free download, there is little movement to remove this format. The PDF is still a 2 dimensional drawing with limited manipulation capabilities, but works just as well as the 2D AutoCAD files in certain circumstances. For instance, when I’m on the phone with a customer looking for help with the drawings, I can pull up the PDF and read off any dimension the customer needs. I don’t have AutoCAD on my PC and by using the PDF I don’t HAVE to have additional software.
Polycase offers both 2D and 3D drawings to our customers. Whatever your need, we can meet it. While many of our 2D drawings are available online currently, any drawings that are not available for download can be emailed to you. Additionally we have 3D versions of most of our product line available to email as well. Soon we will have the all drawings, all options, available for download directly from our website, without having to email us. Once we have the capability, the drawings will be available to you 24 hours a day.
And for those of you wondering, I ordered a creamy parmesan salad. For the main course I had chicken stuffed with proscuitto and fontina cheese with fettucini alfredo as my side dish. (Yes it was delicious!) I had a draft beer and water to drink. I know as an Italian I should be able to order a glass of wine but well … beer’s just an easier option.
