Understanding NEMA Ratings on Polycase Enclosures

May 24th, 2012

Polycase has several series of enclosures that meet NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association) ratings for electronic enclosures. The NEMA Standard for Enclosures for Electrical Equipment tests for environmental conditions such as corrosion, rust, icing, oil and coolants. One enclosure can hold multiple NEMA ratings.  Take any of our WA, WC or WP Series enclosures for example; all of these boxes meet NEMA 1, 2, 4, 4X, 12 and 13 specifications.

Let’s break down what each of these ratings mean:

NEMA 1 – Enclosure is intended for indoor use to provide a degree of protection against the ingress of solid foreign objects

NEMA 2 – Enclosure is intended for indoor use to provide a degree of protection against limited amounts of falling water and the ingress of solid foreign objects

NEMA 4 – Enclosure is intended for indoor/ outdoor use to provide a degree of protection against windblown dust or rain, splashing water and is undamaged by the external formation of ice

NEMA 4X – Enclosure is intended for indoor/ outdoor use to provide a degree of protection against corrosion, windblown dust or rain, splashing water and is undamaged by the external formation of ice

NEMA 12 – Enclosure is intended for indoor use to provide a degree of protection against solid foreign objects and dripping non-corrosive liquids

NEMA 13 – Enclosure is intended for indoor use to provide a degree of protection against solid foreign objects, dripping, spraying, splashing or seepage of oil and non-corrosive coolants

One of our newest enclosures, the ML Series, has also been designed to meet the above NEMA specifications. The ML Series is in the process of obtaining its UL certification, officially rating the series to NEMA standards.  Watch out for our official announcement soon!
